podcasts Soulshadows II: Key To our Heart
A lot of people missed it last week -- at least We havent read much local commentary about it -- but there was a bit of corporate cock wagging in the broadcast media realm that was pretty ridiculous.Of course, it all beings with Rupert Murdoch, head honcho atews Corp which owns a bunch of crap including the FOX TVetworks (and, incidentally, The Wall Street Journal). The 30-second version goes something like this: Murdoch thinks hisetworks programming is so awesome that he should get an extra $1 for each of Time Warner Cables subscribers for the privilege of carrying this supposedly awesome content. Dont pay it, and Murdoch pulls the plug on all FOX programming.According to our inside sources, Time Warner Cable has roughly 14.5 million subscribers. So, doing some quick math, thats about $14.5 million bucks worth of blackmail. Of course TWC is balking at this. Seems taking a $14.5 million out of their $1.2 billion in income is just too much to swallow -- even though they would surly pass that ransom on as higher costs to their subscribers. Now We dont really have any love for either company (although We do like The Wall Street Journal). The TWC cable/internet service we get at home manages to frustrate me on a weekly basis. And as for FOX, well, We consider their programming to be at least 25% responsible for our accelerated cultural decline. So its easy for me to say a pox on both their houses. But it strikes that this move by FOX is a bit shortsighted. Their argument is that they have totally awesome shows and they point to ratings of American Idol and 24 as proof. But lets face it, they would haveear the ratings they have were itot for those shows being available on TWC. Yank those show from TWC and two things will happen:The collective IQ of TWC subscribers will begin to go up as a result ofot wasting time with American Idol, Glee and Foxews Channel, andThe ratings and accompanying ad revenue of those shows go down as a result of being in 14.5 million fewer households. We suspect that both parties already know this. Theyeed each other like a couple of symbiotic parasites.Oh well. As long as We get our college football.tagged: media, pop culture, FOX, Time Warner Cable, American Idol, Rupert Murdoch, Glee, television
Warning: itsot pretty You can thank Saberpoint for this one He also adds: Ellie is the daughter of Turnoutda and Flickeringporch Light, of Laymebrayne,ew York. She has an older brother, Bud, and a younger brother, Flash. Her hobbies include scaring children, making excuses for Obamas incompetence, and traveling about the country writing letters toewspapers. Heh. He also has a rebuttal to "Ellie Lights" original letter here.On a seriousote, The Cleveland Plain Dealer had this:Ellie Light, the ubiquitous letter writer whoseame appeared inewspapersationwide praising President Barack Obama, appears to really be a male health care worker from California.A man who identified himself as Winston Steward, 51, of Frazier Park, Calif., says he made up theame "Ellie Light" to protect himself from criticism and possible physical attacks, and used fake addresses across the country to get localewspapers to publish his letters. So, Ellie is a dude (Not that theres anything wrong with that)"We am Winston Steward and have been sending the letters from Ellie Light," he told The Plain Dealer in an e-mail late Tuesday, following a phone interview in which he said the same. "We hope this ends any confusion and sets the record straight."Oh, yeah Theres absolutelyo confusion as to why some guy would claim to be a woman who lived in dozens of places around the country just so that he could bleat out the same oneote about Obama the Transparent and how wonderful he was /sarcasmAnd something We didot know about California law, but haveo problem with:Theame "Ellie Light" appeared with letters that ran inewspapers in multiple states, including California -- where state law makes it a misdemeanor to sign and send "any letter addressed to aewspaper with theame of a person other than himself." An anti-sockpuppet law Whoda thunk itSaberpoint once again:"Ellie Light" is merely the pseudonym for a group of Democratic operatives trying to spread propaganda and make it look like "grass roots" opinion. It is false, but it is useful in one regard: it demonstrates so well the falsity and the cynicism of those who manipulate public opinion through falsehood and fraud. There is at least circumstantial evidence to suggest that "Ellie" wasot the work of a lone crank, but an orchestrated effort by ham-handed flaks to generate "astro-turf". For instance: the "Ellie Light" that wrote Say Anything had a different IP address than the one that wrote Ed Morrissey. The twitter contacts and followers seem to suggest that this guy Winston is connected to flaks paid by the White House. If "Captain Combover" wanted to take out an ad in theew York Times and say "Rah, rah, we love Obama", theresothing wrong with that. But this stealth campaign of trying to influence people through deceit and false populism is abhorrent to the idea of a democrat Republic with an informed electorate. It is manipulation of the crassest kind. Thanks to Riehl World View, Pattericos Pontifications, and Left Coast Rebel for their work in uncovering this dishonest, anti-transparency of the "OComma" administration.Cross posted at Say Anything
